There has never been any new gold, only gold we have found, and nearly all of it ever mined is still here, held in vaults and heirlooms and jewelry boxes. Pulling more of it from the ground comes at a cost that never appears on a price tag: forests cleared, waterways contaminated, and tons of earth moved for a few grams of metal.
